A digital recreation inspired by a broadside reward advert from 1865 for the capture of Lincoln assassination conspirators, John H. Surratt, John Wilkes Booth, and David E. Harold (Herold). Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, a nationwide manhunt sought his killer, John Wilkes Booth, and his accomplices. In a bold move, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton issued an advert offering a staggering $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Booth and fellow conspirators. Booth, a well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer, had fled Washington, D.C., after shooting Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. The reward offer — a vast sum for the time — underscored the urgency and determination to capture those responsible for Lincoln’s tragic death.
