Spurred in part by the Great Irish Famine of 1847, the US experienced a massive wave of immigration from Ireland in the decades preceding the Civil War. Enlistment posters often featured the symbols of the eagle and the harp to draw a connection between the new and old countries. The 3rd Regiment of the Irish Brigade, composed mainly of Irish immigrants, played a significant role in the Civil War (1861–1865).
