The American Turtle was an early submarine designed during the American Revolutionary War by David Bushnell. Built in 1775, the one-man submersible aimed to attach explosives to British warships. The hand-cranked vessel made attempts during the Battle of New York but achieved limited success. Though the Turtle did not significantly impact the war, it marked an innovative step in naval technology and laid the groundwork for future submarine development. The American Turtle remains a fascinating chapter in early maritime engineering history.
