An eyewitness account in the form of a poem from the pen of James Joseph Walsh (J.J. Walsh), an active participant in the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916. Born in Rathroon, County Cork in 1880, Walsh helped establish the Irish Volunteers in Cork City in 1913. Despite being imprisoned and sentenced to death, he survived the events of 1916 thanks to an amnesty. Walsh became the first Postmaster General of the Irish Free State in 1922, followed with a career in politics. His verses captured the spirit of rebellion and the sacrifice of those within the iconic building. The G.P.O. stood as a symbol of Irish independence, and Walsh's words echoed the courage and determination of those who took a stand for freedom amid the turbulent events of that pivotal year.
