The Sand Creek Massacre occurred on November 29, 1864, in southeastern Colorado. U.S. Colonel John Chivington led 675 volunteer soldiers in a surprise attack on a peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho village, despite the tribe’s display of a white and U.S. flag. Over 230 Native Americans were killed, mostly women, children, and the elderly. The brutal assault shocked the nation and fueled further conflict between Native tribes and the U.S. government. It remains a symbol of betrayal and injustice in American history.
