The H. L. Hunley was a Confederate submarine notable for being the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy warship. Launched during the American Civil War in 1863, the Hunley achieved this feat by torpedoing the Union warship USS Housatonic off the coast of South Carolina in 1864. However, the Hunley itself mysteriously sank shortly after the attack, leading to the loss of its crew. The submarine was recovered in 2000, shedding light on its innovative design and historic significance.
