The Bear River Massacre occurred on January 29, 1863, near present-day Preston, Idaho. U.S. Army troops under Colonel Patrick Connor attacked a Shoshone village in retaliation for earlier conflicts. Despite being poorly armed, the Shoshone resisted, but over 300 — mostly women and children were killed. The massacre is one of the deadliest attacks on Native Americans in U.S. history. Survivors faced brutal winter conditions and starvation. The event remains a painful reminder of injustice during westward expansion and Indigenous displacement.
