The Society of United Irishmen was founded in Belfast in 1791 by a group of reform-minded individuals, including Theobald Wolfe Tone, Samuel Neilson and Thomas Russell. Inspired by the ideals of the American and French Revolutions, the United Irishmen sought to unite Catholics, Protestants, and Dissenters in Ireland to achieve political reform, religious equality, and Irish independence from British rule. Initially, they advocated for peaceful reform, but as British repression intensified, the society shifted towards revolutionary methods. The United Irishmen played a key role in the 1798 Rebellion, an uprising that sought to overthrow British control of Ireland. Cave Hill, with its panoramic views over Belfast, became a symbol of the revolutionary spirit that would eventually lead to the 1798 Rebellion. The original illustration (1890) is by Dublin artist John Dooley Reigh (1851 - 1914).
