The H. L. Hunley was a Confederate submarine that made history as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy warship. On February 17, 1864, during the American Civil War, the Hunley attacked and sank the Union warship USS Housatonic off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. However, the Hunley itself mysteriously sank shortly after the successful mission. Recovered in 2000, the submarine offered valuable insights into naval warfare but remained a symbol of both innovation and peril during the Civil War era.
