Penn's Treaty with Native Americans, also known as the Great Treaty, was an agreement in 1682 between William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, and the Lenape tribe. According to legend, Penn and the Lenape, led by Chief Tamanend, reached a peaceful accord under an elm tree in present-day Philadelphia. The treaty, symbolizing cooperation and respect, fostered positive relations between the European settlers and the Lenape. While the historical accuracy is debated, the treaty is an enduring symbol of diplomacy and coexistence.
