The Dawes Act of 1887 aimed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream American society by allotting communal tribal lands to individual households. Ostensibly designed to encourage agriculture, the act led to the loss of vast native lands and the erosion of indigenous communal structures. Much of the allotted land was sold to non-Native individuals, further diminishing native autonomy. The Dawes Act left a lasting impact, contributing to the dispossession and cultural disruption of many Native American communities.
